Information about TExES
To become a certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment, you must take and pass two portions of the TExES examination. These two tests are Visually Impaired (36) and Baille (75).
It is highly recommended that you take the braille exam very soon after completing the EDSP 5382 course. In order to be eligible to take the Braille TExES exam, you must have completed EDSP 5382 with an A or B. The Visually Impaired exam must be taken after completing all program requirements.
TExES website. The TExES website can be accessed at www.texes.ets.org. This site provides all the information that you will need to prepare for and register for the TExES exams. You will find downloadable study guides and preparation manuals, online registration form, and test dates.
Registration. The teacher certification office at Texas Tech will submit your name as “candidate eligible” when you are admitted into the program and “candidate approved to test” when you complete the appropriate coursework to SBEC/TEA (State Board of Educator Certification/Texas Education Agency). You will have an SBEC unique identifier to use when you register for the exam. You can then get online at www.texes.ets.org and complete online registration. You must pay the fee with a Visa or Mastercard.
If you attempt to register and are denied, or if you have questions regarding registration for the TExES, please contact Dr. Pam Tipton at 806-742-1998 ext 451 or by e-mail at pam.tipton@ttu.edu or Earnestine Frazier at 806-742-1998 ext. 439 or by e-mail at earnestine.frazier@ttu.edu.
Study Guides:
TExES Study Guides and Preparation Manuals will no longer by shipped to the universities for students to get copies. You should use the SBEC web site for the most current copy or National Evaluation Systems site. Study guides can also be found at www.excetstudy.com.
Note: The TTU Special Education Program requires students to complete all of their organized coursework (coursework does not include internship and does not refer to the Braille ExCET) before taking the Vision, Diagnostician, or Generic ExCET exams. Students are encouraged to take the Braille ExCET as soon as they can AFTER completing the Braille course with a grade of "B" or better.
