News from the Director
I returned back to Lubbock from India on January 1, 2010 to very cold
weather and snow in my backyard and started working at the Center a
few hours on January 7th and 8th.
I want to express my appreciation for the great work that was accomplished
while I was away. Under Dr. Roseanna Davidson’s supervision, the Acting
Director, during the fall semester, the Center faculty and staff sponsored
a celebration of the National White Cane Day; presented at a TTU Job
Fair at the Lubbock Civic Center; held the 11th Annual Sowell Center
Annual Distinguished Lecture on Prosthetic Vision presented by Dr. Matthew
McMahon; co-sponsored with the TTU Office of Student Disabilities Services,
“In the Blink of an Eye”, a presentation by Marcus Engel; and the annual
holiday Christmas donation and wrapping of gifts for residents of the
Lubbock State School.
Currently we are planning Center Advisory Board meetings on March 12
and November 12 to review the strategic plan. Based on information from
our strategic planning process one year ago we decided to change our
name to The Virginia Murray Sowell Center for Research and Education
in Sensory Disabilities.
The 12th Annual Sowell Center Annual Distinguished Lecture will be November
13, 2010 on Functional Vision Evaluations with Children with Visual
Impairments and Additional Disabilities.
Dr. Amy Parker with Ms. Beth Case, a research associate, and George
Odongo, a TTU doctoral student, travelled to Uganda to conduct research
and attend the Helen Keller World Conference on Deafblindness. See the
Sowell Center website for more information.
Single handedly Dr. Rona Pogrund directed the Reach Across Texas Program
with great success. Since Dr. Pogrund joined the faculty four years
ago our student enrollment has increased by 150%. She continues to be
actively involved in advocacy efforts with the state legislature.
Dr. Davidson is our grants queen writing and securing multiple grants.
The Sowell Center applauds her for these efforts.
The Center staff adapted well to my being away and carrying on the Center’s
mission. I thank each of them. These people are the backbone of our
Center.
Hats off to Ms. Case for being our advance technology wiz who is getting
us more current with a Facebook fan page and Twitter. She was also instrumental
in putting the www.educ.ttu.edu/sowell/India up for me.
Best wishes for the New Year and thank you for your continued interest
and support.
