About the Program:
Science and Mathematics Education is an academic program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The undergraduate program prepare creative, reflective and innovative professional educators with high moral and ethical standards who view themselves as agents of change, who are committed to the welfare of children, and who have the understanding, attitudes and skills necessary for effective teaching of science and mathematics in early childhood (EC) through 12th grade classrooms.
Standards
Program work within Science and Mathematics Education is developed and guided by a strong conceptual framework, standards from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), criteria from the State of Texas, guidelines from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the sound professional judgment of an experienced and caring faculty.
Degree/Certification programs of study
General information is available about teacher certification online. More specifically, there are several certification and/or degree programs within Science and Mathematics Education.
- One program is for undergraduate students seeking a bachelor’s degree with certification to be either a 4th grade through 8th grade teacher or an 8th grade through 12th grade teacher.
- The College of Education also offers a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Multidisciplinary Science, which leads to a science teaching certificate, grades 8-12.
- Another program is for individuals who already possess a bachelor’s degree but want to earn an initial teaching certification through a post-baccalaureate program.
- Some individuals with a bachelor’s degree and a science teacher certification may enter a program culminating with a Master’s Degree (content of link to be developed) in Multidisciplinary Science.
- An advanced graduate program culminates in a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Science and Mathematics Education Area of Emphasis.

Science and Mathematics Education candidates come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Many individuals have either worked at, or are currently employed by a school district. To accommodate the needs of these working professionals, the program routinely offers a variety of evening and summer courses, some of which are offered through a distance delivery format.
