The purpose of the academy is to assist the federal and state governments in improving the public health and safety by supporting and promoting services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired through standards of excellence for professionals involved in the delivery of vision rehabilitation and educational services.

Virginia Murray Sowell Center for Visual Impairment

The Sowell center is sponsored by Texas Tech University.  It's purpose is to promote excellence in the education of teachers of visually impaired learners, promote research in the education of visually impaired learners and to serve as a resource for educators of the visually impaired.
