The Jones Fellowships for Graduate Students

The Jones Fellowships are named in honor of Helen DeVitt Jones who was a native of West Texas, an honors graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and an educational philanthropist. She was noted for an interest in preventing educational problems by addressing them as early as possible.

Mrs. Jones funded the Helen Jones Foundation in 1984.  She was an avid supporter of the fine arts and organizations working with both public school and collegiate students.  To that end, the Foundation endowed the Jones Fellowship in Education in 2000, a program which was successfully conducted in 1975 and benefitted forty-five doctoral students in the College of Education.  The refunding of this program through a permanent endowment provides support to attract outstanding scholars to pursue graduate degrees in the College of Education at Texas Tech University. 

Jones Fellows are expected to bring to the program an active spirit of inquiry, a strong commitment to the profession, and a desire to participate in student leadership and curricular and co-curricular activities of the College of Education.
