The ability to 'stream' video over the internet is becoming increasingly viable as more users obtain broadband connections (DSL / cable modems). We are investigating the uses of streaming video within several courses and grant projects. In the future, once we finish the beta testing process, College of Education professors will be able to request assistance in making course video clips (for which requisite copyright permission has been obtained) available from our website in a streaming video format.
At present, we are testing streaming video in three different formats. The links below are for free player software for each format:
We are utilizing a TTU network services hosted Real streaming server for Real Media content. We are temporarily beta testing a Macintosh Quicksilver server running OS X Server and the Darwin Streaming Server. We have not yet setup streaming server support for Windows Media format, but this support can be provided by Darwin Streaming Server. We may beta test the Darwin Streaming Server running on Windows 2000 server.
Besides good performance, the Darwin Streaming server looks like a great solution compared to Microsoft alternatives due to pricing / licensing issues (Darwin is open source.)
