Helpful Tips for Using Laptops and LCD Projectors

Windows Macintosh

These instructions are for the Dell laptops our college presently has for checkout.

Turn on the lightware first.

The video mirroring setting must be correct for the laptop to send a video signal to a LCD projector.

Hold down the FN (function) Key in the lower left corner of the laptop and press the F8 function key ( top of the keyboard) to toggle between the 3 different video modes:

  1. Laptop screen shown only .
  2. LCD projector screen shown only.
  3. Laptop AND LCD projector shown ( video mirroring mode).

If the computer screen image is not showing up on the LCD projector:

  1. Toggle between these three modes as described above.
  2. Check your connections to the computer and LCD projector.
  3. Make sure the INPUT SOURCE for the LCD projector is set to RGB/VGA/Computer.

Turn on the lightware first.

Older black Powerbook G3 computers running Operating System 9:

Start up the laptop after the LCD projector is turned on and plugged into the laptop. Alternatively, close the laptop lid to put it to sleep, get the LCD projector turned on and plugged in, then wake the computer up from sleep.

Set up video mirroring by :

  1. Clicking on the Apple menu in the upper left corner.
  2. Choosing Control Panel.
  3. Choosing the MONITOR AND SOUND control panel.
  4. Change the screen resolution to 1024x768 (simulscan). This will show the video image on both the laptop screen and on the LCD projector.

For Newer iBooks and Powerbook G4's runnning OS X (Operating System ten):

  1. In the Upper right corner of the screen, click on the icon that looks like a rectangular flat screen display and choose DETECT DISPLAYS.
