eFax / Acrobat Instructions

For Macintosh and Windows Users

These instructions are provided for professors, instructors, and RAs who would like students to fax assignments (hand written or computer generated), convert them to electronic form, and provide feedback to students within Adobe Acrobat by modifying PDF files.

Setup

  1. Sign up for a free eFax account at www.efax.com.

  2. Provide the email of the person who will actually be receiving these assignments and processing them to eFax.

  3. Provide the eFax number (provided after registration is complete) to students who will fax in assignments.
  4. Download free eFax Messenger software to view and work with submitted faxes. Install eFax Messenger on the computer of the person who will receive the faxes.
  5. Install Adobe Acrobat software (not free-- this must be purchased) on the computer of the person who will receive the faxes.
  6. Provide instructions to students about how they can download FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader software for their computers, to read returned assignments.

Step 1: Convert Received Faxes to PDF Format

  1. When you recieve an attached student eFax assignment, it will be attached to an email message but not identifiable as to who sent it. Save this attachment to your hard drive or on your network to the desired folder. This file will be in TIF format, which is an uncompressed image format.
  2. Open eFax Messenger software.
  3. Open the TIF file (the attachment you just saved) from the location where you saved it.
  4. Convert the TIF file into a PDF File:

Step 2: Annotate the PDF file in Acrobat

  1. Double click the converted PDF file. It should open in Adobe Acrobat (NOT Acrobat Reader).
  2. Scroll to the part of the document you would like to insert a note on.
  3. Click on the NOTE tool on the left-hand toolbar to select it.
  4. Click on the document where you would like to insert a note, and type your comment.
  5. Repeat steps #2 - 4 as needed.
  6. Choose FILE - SAVE to save the PDF file with the included annotations.

Step 3: Share the PDF file with others

This PDF file can now be shared with others electronically by either:

  1. Emailing it as an attachment to recipients.
  2. Posting it on a webpage for download and viewing / printing. In this case, provide users with instructions for downloading / installing / using Acrobat Reader software, located on http://www.educ.ttu.edu/howto/acroreader.html.
