How-To Guides:
Downloading Images from a Sony Memory Stick using the Sony Card Reader

For Macintosh and Windows Users

This how-to-guide helps you to download the images from a Sony memory stick using a Sony card reader.

First make sure the Sony Card Reader  is plugged into the computer. If not plug the same into the USB port of your computer.

Turn off the camera, take the memory stick  out of the camera and insert it all the way (until you hear a click) into the reader in the direction as pointed on the memory stick.

Wait till the red light on the reader goes off and then perform the following steps in order:

1. Click on the "START" button on the computer and click on "My Computer" to see the card reader drive mounted as a new drive. ( Sony Memory Stick - F: - for example ).

If you are using a Mac then the card reader drive would be mounted on the desktop.

2. Double click on this new drive  (F: - for example) / desktop icon  to see the memory stick folders. Some of them are the following:

On a Windows Machine

On a Macintosh

NOTE: On a Mac you do not see the .DS_Store file.

3. Double click on "DCIM" to see two items in that folder.

4. Double click on "100 MSDCF". You will see all the pictures you have just taken. On a windows machine in addition to the pictures you will see a file called ".DS_Store". You can ignore this file.

On a Windows Machine

On a Macintosh

5. Copy all the picture files ( Not the .DS_Store file) to a new folder on your computer ( maybe on the desktop) and paste all the picture files you have just copied into this new folder. On a Windows machine you can select multiple files by holding down " Ctrl " key and on a Mac you can do the same by holding down the " shift " key. You can also select multiple files on both the machines by holding down the mouse button and dragging it across all the desired files.

6. MAKE SURE THE COPIES ON YOUR COMPUTER OPEN PROPERLY BEFORE DELETING FILES FROM THE MEMORY STICK. YOU CANNOT UNDO THE DELETE PROCESS. Now you can safely delete all the files from the folder "100 MSDCF" in the memory stick. This is to empty the space in the memory stick. The space is not actually free until you empty the 'recycle bin' on a windows machine or the 'trash' folder on a Macintosh.

8. Now you can email the picture files on your computer to anyone as an attachment. Or if the pictures are too many you can burn a CD containing the picture files.
