College of Education Future Undergraduates

Texas Tech University is an exciting place to learn, study, and succeed -- from here it's possible!  Our faculty and staff are friendly, and we aim toward straightforward processes to help our students achieve their career goals.

Program Requirements Undergraduates Need to Know

Core Curriculum Requirements: The university has established Core curriculum requirements for all students.  You should consult your academic advisor prior to your first enrollment to avoid losing credit by taking courses that do not count toward your degree. You may find a listing of Core Curriculum requirements under Undergraduate Academics at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/officialpublications/catalog/_AcademicsCore.php.

Academic Foundations: During your freshman and sophomore years, you will normally complete your general degree requirements for both the Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate.  Coursework in professional education and certification are usually completed in the junior and senior years.

Professional Education: Teacher Education programs in the College of Education are field-based.  You will be in classrooms observing and helping out in public school settings.  These field experiences may require time outside of classroom time also.

Student Load: The maximum load for a student in the College of Education is 19 semester hours.  No student will be permitted to enroll in more than 18 semester hours, including online work, without the written approval from the Department Chair or Associate Dean for Teacher Education.  The maximum is 12 semester hours--9-12 hours of student teaching plus any requisite education course. Requests to take more than 12 hours must be approved by the certification officer.

Education Minor: Students seeking secondary certification may minor in secondary education. Consult your advisor for details.
