Discussion

Fragile X syndrome, also referred to as Martin-Bell syndrome, is characterized by an unusual "look".  In boys, these characteristics may include long ears, long face, large testes, delayed speech, hyperactivity, tactile defensiveness and gross motor delays.

Fragile X is an inherited form of mental retardation that is most common in males.  Characteristics of autism may be seen in females but tend to be mild.  Half of the girls that carry the genetic mutation have symptoms.  Out of the fifty percent, half have normal intelligence while a fourth have IQ's under 70.  Few girls will have symptoms of autism but are very quiet and shy.
