Discussion

Children diagnosed with Childhood Disintegrative Disorder show evidence of normal development for the first 2 to 4 years in the areas of communication, social relationships, play and adaptive behavior.  Similar to Kanner's classic autism, children with CDD experience a loss of language abilities. Unfortunately, these children also experience loss in other areas.

A. Disorder includes a significant loss of previously acquired skills (before age 10) in at least two of the following areas:

Expressive or receptive language skills
Social skills or adaptive behavior
Bowel or bladder control
Play skills
Motor Skills

B. Abnormalities in functioning will occur in at least two of the following areas:

Qualitative impairments in social interactions
Qualitative impairments in communication
Restricted, repetitive movements and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities including stereotypical motor mannerisms.

The disturbance is not better accounted for by another specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder or by Schizophrenia.
