Children diagnosed with Childhood Disintegrative Disorder show evidence of normal development for the first 2 to 4 years in the areas of communication, social relationships, play and adaptive behavior. Similar to Kanner's classic autism, children with CDD experience a loss of language abilities. Unfortunately, these children also experience loss in other areas.
A. Disorder includes a significant loss of previously acquired skills (before age 10) in at least two of the following areas:

B. Abnormalities in functioning will occur in at least two of the following areas:

Qualitative impairments in social interactions |

Qualitative impairments in communication |
 |
Restricted, repetitive movements and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities including stereotypical motor mannerisms. |
The disturbance is not better accounted for by another specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder or by Schizophrenia.
