“LOVING YOUR STUDENTS IS THE ESSENCE OF TEACHING” is the quotation that is written on the chalkboard at the beginning of each semester in my Children’s Literature classroom.  This quote reflects my philosophy of teaching as I believe that establishing a meaningful, personal relationship with each student is essential for effective teaching.  Good teaching is not just a relationship between students and knowledge but also between university students and their professors.  It is my goal to look for the butterfly inside each student’s cocoon of enthusiasm, reserve, indifference or pain.  How exciting it is to foster my students’ discovery of the beauty and power of their own ideas, their own worth; to nurture in them the skills, the self-confidence, and the desire they need to soar in the exhilaration of their own accomplishments.

Joseph Campbell’s sage advice to his students is simple:  “Follow your bliss.”  Teaching is my passion, my “bliss” in life.  My dream to become a teacher began at an early age as I wanted to emulate the heroes of my life—those men and women who welcomed and nurtured a strong-willed, yet fragile, child from the poor-side-of –town into their magical world of books, ideas and knowledge!!  Now, years later, having earned my place among the ranks of those I most admired, I, too, have the privilege of making a difference in my students’ lives.  The young people in my university classes are also waiting-as I was-for someone to care, to challenge, to inspire, and to nurture their respective dreams.  Just as I strive to inspire my students, they are also a continuous source of inspiration to me!!
