Sally McMillan, PhD
(Louisiana State University, 2001)
Short Biography
Sally McMillan received her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Louisiana State University in May 2001. Having been a summer student at Shantou University in the Peoples Republic of China during her undergraduate days, she remains interested in international education. Prior to her doctoral studies Dr. McMillan worked in public education for 10 years. Her interest in the role that narrative plays within student learning emerged during her time as a middle and secondary English and drama teacher. Coupled with cultural studies, it continued to grow during her work in the ESL / Bilingual Office at the Louisiana Department of Education. In addition to narrative theory and cultural studies, her research interests include interdisciplinary nature studies and the contributions of present-day teachers and 19th-century women writers to education. Currently, she is a graduate faculty member at Texas Tech University in both Curriculum Studies and the Secondary Education Program. She is also one of the five faculty responsible for Project REAL (Recruiting Educators through Alternative Licensure), which is a five year transition to teaching grant funded by the United States Department of Education. Project REAL is designed to provide high quality, fast-track secondary alternative certification courses within a professional development school model. In addition, Project REAL focuses on recruiting, equipping, and retaining increasing numbers of minority teachers to the field of education.
