About the Program:

Instructional Technology is an academic programs in the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership.  The program was established to prepare professionals at the masters (M.Ed.) and doctoral (Ed.D.) levels, and is designed to meet the needs of individuals desiring to become specialists in the field of instructional technology, to obtain public school certification in computing technology, or to obtain specific technology skills.

Standards

Program work within Instructional Technology is developed and guided by a strong conceptual framework, the standards from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), guidelines from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), criteria from the State of Texas, and the sound professional judgment of an experienced and caring faculty.

Degree/Certification programs of study

There are several programs of study within Instructional Technology.  The master’s level program offers two tracks, educational computing and distance education. The doctoral program has a single track designed to prepare practitioners for leadership roles as public school and college level educators, or for work in training positions in business and industry. Both levels include a solid foundation in research, curriculum, and teaching skills with an emphasis in instructional design and educational technology.

Also, two Texas teacher certification programs, Technology Applications and Master Technology Teacher, are available and may be taken in conjunction with any graduate degree program.   Technology Applications leads to an initial teaching certificate.  Master Technology Teacher is a professional certificate and is based on an individual already having an initial teaching certificate.

All of the above programs are described in detail in a variety of online handbooks and documents that are accessed through the links found on this homepage.

Instructional Technology candidates come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds.  Many program participants have either worked at, or are currently employed by, a school district, college, or business.  To accommodate the needs of these working professionals, the Instructional Technology Program routinely offers a variety of evening and summer courses.  Some of these courses utilize distance education delivery systems.
