Dora Salazar, Ed.D.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

In Fall 2006, Dr. Dora Salazar was appointed in the College of Education as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. She is also the Assistant Director of the College of Education, Center for Research on Leadership and Education and Program Director of Project TEACH for Bilingual Education and Diversity Studies. Prior to joining Texas Tech, Dr. Salazar was the Director of Alternative Certification and a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Texas – Pan American. She earned her doctorate at Texas Tech University in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.  Dr. Salazar’s professional interests include teacher certification and professional development, and she has presented many workshops in those areas. She is a member of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), the Texas Association for Bilingual Education Texas (TABE), is the President of the Lubbock Area Association for Bilingual Education, and also serves as a Scorer for the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) for the Texas Education Agency.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Dr. Salazar currently directs and is the Co-Principal Investigator for Project TEACH a teacher training program in the College of Education funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) as part of the National Professional Development Program under Title III of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Project partners include area school districts, the Texas Education Agency, Education Service Center Regions throughout the Panhandle in Abilene, San Angelo, Amarillo, Lubbock, and the TTU Hill Country Satellite campuses.  Her research interest includes the development of teacher preparation program models, the investigation of federal and state education policies and certification issues, issues dealing with out-of-state and foreign credential teachers, and the examination of instructional approaches for the preparation and ongoing training of teachers serving English Language Learners (ELLs) in the state of Texas. Dr. Salazar has authored and received several grants which have been successful in supporting Undergraduate and Graduate teacher training programs.  She is particularly interested in biliteracy, second language acquisition, and language issues impacting the education of Latino students. Previously, she taught in a bilingual education program in the elementary grades, served as part of a consultant team to provide professional development to dual language schools in Texas, and trained Head Start administrators and teachers serving migrant populations in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Also, Dr. Salazar actively serves on several state, community, and university committees.
