History
In October of 2003, the WorkSource of the South Plains Education Committee sponsored a summit called Closing the Gaps Education Summit and brought in the State Demographer, Dr. Steve Murdoch, to speak to the education issues we face as Texans. The Partners present agreed upon the name - South Plains Closing the Gaps Coalition.
The council at that time identified areas of concern and drafted the Mission Statement and Plan of Action. In March of 2004 a press conference was held as ESC Region 17 and the MOU was signed and celebrated by all partners.
Activities/Partnerships of the Coalition (3 years):
- Juneteenth Education Days - Held in conjunction with Juneteenth festivites
- Back to School Fiesta University Days - Families brought to Texas Tech Campus
- Career Expos - High school students
- Summer Camps - Funded by partners
- Juanita's Diary DVD Curriculum - Resource tools for motivating sutdents & parents toward education
- Education Summit (yearly) - Focus on high school students, educators, higher education institutions and community leaders
