Long Distance Student Teaching Information
The College of Education partners with area school districts within Texas which provide high-quality experiences. Partnering districts also provide accountable supervision by districts for student teachers while maintaining and ensuring mastery of the college's evaluation competencies. Texas Tech University prospective student teachers choosing to complete student teaching long distance will be placed with these cooperating districts only. For specific location information, prospective student teachers should refer to 'Partnering Areas for Long Distance Student Teachers'. All prospective student teachers are required to complete criminal background checks with the district in which they will complete student teaching.
Student teachers who chose to complete student teaching long distance must first receive clearance to student teach through his/her College of Education advisor. Prospective student teachers must also apply to student teach with the Coordinator of Student Teaching by attending an application meeting to complete an on-line application. Application meetings are held during the semester prior to the projected student teaching experience. Student teachers must complete and return two copies of the 'Request for Eligibility for Long Distance Student Teaching' (one to the Coordinator of Student Teaching and one to his/her COE advisor). Prospective student teachers are also required to submit three 'Fitness to Teach On-Line Checklist Requests' to three College of Education professors/instructors for recommendations as well as one paper copy of the 'Fitness to Teach Checklist for Field-Experience Mentor Teachers' (a teacher from current or previous field-based experience).
If prospective student teachers are interested in completing student teaching internationally, the 'TTU Department of Defense International' (DOD) as well as the 'Department of Defense Application' are required in addition to the aforementioned forms. International student teachers are required to obtain a passport, be fingerprinted through a state or national agency for the DOD criminal background check and submit the fingerprints (report) to the DOD. International placements are competitive, requiring the student teacher to plan in advance for a housing budget as well as other incidental expenses.
