11th Annual Sowell Center Lecture Series
Prosthetic Vision
Spend an exciting day with Dr.
Matt McMahon from Second Sight Medical Products, Inc.
We will discuss cutting edge technology of prosthetic vision, focusing
on the Argus II, a second generation electronic retinal implant, and the
crucial role low-vision and vision rehabilitation specialists will play
in its continuing development and clinical implementation.
Prosthetic Vision
The
Argus II is a three-part system designed to transmit information about
the physical environment directly to an individual’s retina, thus
bypassing the photoreceptors that have been damaged due to Retinitis
Pigmentosa or Macular Degneration. It consists of a
60-electrode grid that is surgically implanted and attached to the
retina. These electrodes transmit information
acquired from an external video camera that is mounted on a pair of
eyeglasses. The implant has been designed to last
many years but can be safely removed if necessary.
About Our Speaker

Medical Products, a company founded in 1998 to create a retinal
prosthesis to provide sight to patients blinded from outer retinal
degenerations, such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and Macular Degeneration. He
earned his B.S. in Optics at the University of Rochester in 1993 and his
Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, San
Diego in 2000. His broad background in vision science has included
research in visual psychophysics, retinal imaging, and retinal
physiology.
