Dietary Concerns

Researchers have been emphasizing the role of diet, allergies, and food sensitivities which may also cause problems for some on the autism spectrum.
  • The Leaky Gut problem: this problem is very common to individuals with autism. It may cause individuals to have particular trouble digesting two sources of protein: gluten (found in wheat, rye, oats, and other grains) and casein (protein from milk).
  • Allergies and sensitivities: food intolerances or other sensitivities may cause the tissues of the brain to swell and become inflamed, which may result in disturbances of learning and behavior. For example, sugar, corn, chocolate, certain fruits, food coloring, perfumes, and the toxicity of heavy metals may cause allergic reactions.
