Desired Behaviors and Unwanted Behaviors

Management in General

Increasing Desired Behaviors
  • Using intervention strategies that will increase desired behaviors are essential to developing positive outcomes.
  • When planning strategies for increasing desired behaviors, it is important to consider the long-term implications of any proposed changes on the whole person. The primary focus is implementation of strategies to positively influence quality of life over time.
Decreasing Unwanted Behaviors
  • When responding to inappropriate behaviors using punishment or negative consequences, it is critical to include positive reinforcement for acceptable behaviors as part of the intervention plan. Punishment or negative consequence alone will not improve behaviors.
