Some children with autism have difficulty with cognitive flexibility; they are unable to think of alternatives and tend to be rigid and not able to adapt to change. In other words, they focus only on what they have already perceived and are unable to transfer or generalize the new information in a wide range of situations.
Things to remember:
Practice thinking of alternative strategies. |
Remind children of the different circumstances relevant to a particular skill. |
Remind children to learn to ask for help, perhaps using a secret code to avoid embarrassment. |
Use different modalities to teach the same thing. |
