The Burkhart Center
for Autism Education and Research
The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research, named for Jim and Jere Lynn Burkhart who in the past several years have made significant contributions to the college’s mission toward autism, had its official opening in October, 2005. The Center offers a free-of charge approach for helping families with children on the autism spectrum. Their goal is to improve quality of life issues for people who appear on the autism spectrum, their families and their educators.
The center is a valuable resource for the Lubbock area. The Center provides research-based programming to enhance the quality of life for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families. Programs offered include many worthwhile and needed supports for parents, Texas Tech University College of Education students interested in autism, professionals, and community members.
Clients have a lending library available to them and are invited to attend regular lectures given by professionals throughout the community. Research conducted at the center includes three major aspects: developing strategies for the preparation of teachers to meet the needs of students; examining ways to develop parent support networks; and preparing individuals with autism as they transition from school to adult services.
